Designing Your Dream Van: Mixing and Matching Materials with Serg Supply

Cabinetry in a camper van is more than storage; it defines both the look and function of your space. At Serg Supply, we believe your cabinetry should reflect your personality while remaining practical for life on the road. That’s why we offer a variety of finishes, from the rugged durability of Stealth to the warmth of Bamboo, the lightweight versatility of Prefinished Maple, and modern neutral options like grey, white, and black. Most importantly, our products allow you to mix and match materials, creating a van interior that is as functional as it is unique. In each category of products different materials are available. Those materials in each category can be customized to mix and match colors to fit your van vision. The reason this is possible is because the thickness is the same in those materials making it buildable and durable and meant to be long lasting.

Understanding Materials

Prefinished Maple is lightweight at about 1.88 pounds per square foot, making it ideal for builds where every pound counts. It is easy to modify or paint and includes an antimicrobial plywood core. While it offers medium durability and may show natural variations in its grain, it remains an affordable, versatile option for builders who prioritize weight savings and flexibility.

Stealth, or Black Hex, is designed for durability. With water, chemical, and oil resistance, and a load bearing Baltic Birch core, it is perfect for high traffic areas. At about 2.6 pounds per square foot, it is heavier than Maple but unmatched in toughness. Its bold, dark finish pairs well with warmer materials like Bamboo to create striking two toned cabinetry. The trade off is cost and weight, but it is ideal for vanlifers who spend time on rugged terrain or in challenging conditions.

Bamboo, whether prefinished or unfinished, offers consistent, elegant grain patterns in warm amber tones. Prefinished Bamboo is coated with urethane for durability, while Unfinished Bamboo allows builders to apply their own finishes. While not as rugged as Stealth, its aesthetic appeal and its long lasting ability make it a popular choice for van interiors that aim for a polished, high end look.

Grey, White, and Black finishes are available on select wall and cabinetry products. They offer clean, modern aesthetics that complement almost any interior style. These finishes are particularly good for those who want a minimal, contemporary look, though they may require more maintenance to keep surfaces clean, especially in black and white.

Choosing the Right Colors and Materials

Selecting the right materials and colors requires considering lifestyle, environment, and intended use. For vanlifers traveling with pets, darker finishes like Stealth are recommended as they help hide scratches, hair, and minor scuffs. For those traveling in rugged terrain or areas prone to dirt and mud, Stealth is particularly advantageous because of its durability and resistance to water, oils, and chemicals.

Bamboo, both prefinished and unfinished, adds warmth and elegance to any interior but may show wear more readily if exposed to rough use. Maple is ideal when weight savings is important and works well for interior cabinetry or DIY projects where paint or custom finishes are desired. For brighter, more open feeling interiors, White or Maple can make small spaces feel larger, though they may require more maintenance to keep looking pristine. Grey strikes a balance between modern aesthetics and practicality, hiding dirt better than white while remaining neutral and versatile.

Beyond practical considerations, mixing materials and colors is an opportunity to create contrast and visual interest. Kitchens, like the Tapered Van Kitchen, can combine Stealth and Bamboo for a two toned centerpiece, while wall kits and overhead cabinets allow for multi-colored combinations. Selecting complementary colors and materials across ceiling, wall, and cabinetry units creates cohesion, balancing aesthetics and function throughout the van.

Final Thoughts

At Serg Supply, we provide more than just cabinetry; we provide options that allow vanlifers to customize their interior space according to personal style, durability needs, and environmental considerations. From ceiling and wall kits in multiple finishes to overhead cabinets, kitchens, microwave cabinets, and bed systems, every piece can be tailored to meet your aesthetic and practical requirements.

Whether you prefer the rugged strength of Stealth, the warm elegance of Bamboo, or the light versatility of Maple, or want a combination of these materials, the key is to balance form, function, and environment. Consider pets, terrain, and cleaning requirements when choosing materials and colors. By thoughtfully selecting and combining materials, you can design cabinetry that is not only durable and functional but also uniquely yours.

Serg Supply’s flexible offerings ensure that every van build can be as individual as the people who live in it, helping you create a home on wheels that reflects your style and supports your adventures.
